Wandsworth Young Chef of the Year 2018
This year saw two APA students win places in the final of The Young Chef Award 2018. The competition is run by the Mayor of Wandsworth and the council’s lifelong learning team in association with borough schools. It nurtures young talent, teaches young people how to cook good healthy food to a budget, provides a chance to learn from the experts and helps young people get a foothold in the catering industry.
Raheela & Farnhaz has this to say about their experience:
Part of the competition took us to Billingsgate Fish Market, at 5:00am checking out the wide variety of Fish available – there were so many we hadn’t even heard of! The Semi final in school was against other students, which involved cooking a cold starter, main and dessert within 2 hours. The starter had to be served within the first hour. Some of the challenegs we came across were timings and order, getting ingredients prepped in time and ensuring everything came together. We competed against 8 other students from local schools and the expectations were really high – the final dishes were actually judged by professional chefs! We tried our absolute hardest, and sadly we didn’t come first place BUT we did win £50 Vouchers each!
Greek Spinach & Feta Salad
Butter Chicken with rice
Strawberry Sponge Cake with Buttercream
Whilst Raheela's final menu included:
Biryani with Raita Sauce
Oreo Dirt Cake
The finalists will now all take part in the Mayor of Wandsworth’s Young Chef of the Year 2018 Charity Dinner, which is raising money for The Wandsworth Community Safety Trust, St. John Ambulance and the Rotary Club. Students will get the chance to work with Daksha Mistry, former Master Chef finalist, on preparing dinner for the evening.
As part of the competition, the young people involved have already benefited from attending two masterclasses at Billingsgate Seafood School and top London restaurant The Brigade.
Young Chef is funded in part by the European Social Fund/Education and Skills Funding Agency Careers Cluster project Pan Out. Pan Out has enabled this and other initiatives that have developed and supported students in Wandsworth. Watch the video on the link below:
Inspiring. Emotional. What a privilege it was to work on this short-film following 8 young chefs in Wandsworth. Grab a cuppa and have a watch, well worth it.
