Sixth Form student wins borough award

Sixth Former Sophia Dinnall Wins Wandsworth Young Person of the Year Award

This week a member of our Sixth Form, Sophia Dinnall, had the great honour of being awarded a Wandsworth Young Person of the Year Award. Sophia won the Rotary Award for Making a Major Contribution to the Local Community. Competition for this award is intense and the final decision is made by a selection panel. Many of the young people nominated have overcome considerable difficulties or disadvantage in their education and young lives, but have shown determination, leadership and often concern for others more than themselves. Finalists and families were invited to an awards presentation ceremony and meal, this year served by Wandsworth Girl Guides with the Police Cadets as hosts. The Mayor presented the awards. Miss Brimacombe, Head of Sixth Form commented on the triumph “This award is so deserved, Sophia is an incredible young woman who loves to help and serve others, she is humble and kind; an amazing example to all of her peers.”

As a Young Carer and the chair of the Sixth Form Fundraising committee Sophia dedicates a great deal of her time to others. As part of her role on the fundraising committee she has organised cake sales, raffles and even dressed up as a Christmas tree. Sophia said “I’m really proud to have won the award; it feels like all the hard work I put in has paid off.” Sophia hopes to attend De Montfort or Leicester University next year to study interior design. She says this was inspired by moving houses a lot growing up “I never really felt able to put my stamp on a house and make it a home. I want to find cheap and accessible ways for people to make their homes more comfortable, just because somewhere isn’t permanent doesn’t mean it should feel like a hostel.” On behalf of all of Ark Putney Academy I would like to congratulate Sophia on her achievement.
