Local Primaries let us know what it's like to be Headteacher for a day

This week Ark Putney Academy played host to students from All Saints, Brandlehow, Our Lady of Victories, St Marys, Sacred Heart, Granard and Heathmere Primary schools. These students had taken part in Roehampton and Putney’s first ever 'Takeover Day' where the they shadowed their Headteachers for the day. The students got involved in a variety of activities including leading assemblies, observing teachers and even helping to design a new school playground. They came in to our school to let us know how they got on.

Each student gave a 2 minute presentation explaining what they had done during their day. All the students seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt a lot from their experiences. Jokubus and Masroor from Heathmere commented:  ‘We've seen what it's like to be the Headteacher, following Miss Lewis for the whole day. One of the things we did was looking at pupils’ learning around the school and checking that everyone was learning. We have also been in important meetings that have involved budgeting, which was very interesting. We interviewed our headteacher while having some tea.’

Headteachers also really enjoyed the day, Ms Lewis from Heathmere commented, ‘We got so much out of it – it really reaffirmed the power of pupil voice and using pupils as focus groups! I hope other schools are having similarly positive experiences’. Ms Payne from St Mary’s School said, ‘I thoroughly enjoyed the day – it was so refreshing to see the school through the eyes of the children’.

Ark Putney Academy's Mr Evans, who organised the project, said "I think it's really important that the students develop an understanding of how a school works and how much organisation goes into their education. It's great for them to come into Ark Putney and share their findings with children from other schools as it gets them used to a Secondary school environment, and for many of them who will come here next year it will be much less daunting."

Thank you and well done to everyone involved!
