Dear parent carer

Monday 9 December – Full closure for KS3 only

I am writing to advise you that we have reluctantly decided to close KS3 all day on Monday 9 December.  This applies to years 7-9 only.  The Academy will remain open for KS4 and KS5.


We continue to have major issues with staffing, with nearly one third of teachers off sick today.  I am already aware that I have a high number of staff certified as sick for Monday, meaning that we will be unable to cover classes effectively. 


However, by having years 10-13 in school we can continue to provide these exam groups with a quality experience.


I expect all students to return to the Academy on Tuesday 10 December.

Design Technology

Teaching British Values through Design Technology

 Students are able to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence through the learning of new techniques and skills. In addition to this students are taught to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of others through inclusive design.

Students are taught to value  tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by  acquiring an appreciation and respect for their own and other cultures through the study of our multi-cultural design history.

Students are also taught to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England in relation to design and manufacture standards such as the British Kite Mark and European Certification.

Key Stage 3

All technology subjects involve both design and practical skills. They follow a design process from the initial brief which outlines the focus of the project, researching relevant information to help inform design ideas, a specification stating what the product must be or do, our own design ideas and final idea for our products, making the product using different materials. Finally, an evaluation of how well our product performs based on what we want it to do. Assessment is based on designing and making skills. In the department we also like to keep a clear understanding of how design and making is done in the broader outside world of industry.

Product and Textiles Design

Students are introduced to the design process and are taught basic skills such as the use of tools and equipment, health and safety within the workshop, understanding of mechanisms and control systems and analyse existing products to provide starting points and ideas.

Following an induction project, students undertake several designs and make tasks that will give them the ability to research, design, justify, make, test and evaluate products.

All students are expected to develop their own ideas and make decisions for themselves using a wide range of resources.

Projects covered:

Year 7   Laser cut clock project (CAD/CAM project)

                  Pencil Case from recycled material

Year 8   Light (CAD/CAM and electronics project)

                  Phone or tablet cover inspired by the ‘Day of the Dead’

Year 9   Portable Speaker (Resistant Materials)


All lessons combine theory work with practical application.

Food Technology

The Key Stage 3 curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply theoretical skills to practical cookery skills. Students are taught fundamental chef skills which will equip them with skills that they can use in the future such as weighing and measuring ingredients accurately, knife skills and a variety of cooking methods. Final assessments require students to research and produce their own recipe.

Year 7   Healthy Eating Plate– Students will produce a range of dishes that focus on a specific food groups

Year 8   Food Commodities – Students produce a range of dishes that incorporate flour and its many uses

Year 9   Herbs and Spices – Students produce dishes travelling around a culinary map of the world inspired by the spice road.

Food lessons in school have proved to be really popular amongst all the students. The cost of ingredients for the course works out to be approximately £1.50 per lesson, per child and we do ask for parents or carers to contribute £15.00 to the cost so we can continue to deliver a high quality experience to the students.  This cost will cover your child’s term of food lessons and also cover the cost of the foil containers used to take the food home, although we would encourage students to bring in their own containers if possible.

Year 10

Students who will be challenged by a range of practical activities that develop their understanding of the broad perspectives of design, development and manufacturing. Students will learn about woods, plastics and metals and get to experiment with tools, machines and techniques in order to better understand the properties of materials and their uses.

Practical Project:

Greetings Card and Portable Speaker – Card Modelling, CAD/CAM, Electronics

Year 11

Students will design and make their own product in keeping with a design task, set by the exam board. They will also produce a design portfolio, demonstrating research, designing, development, modelling, manufacturing processes, testing and quality control and evaluation.

Examples of previous coursework and past papers will be available on the intranet for students to use as guidance.

Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials, nutrition, equipment, processes, current health issues and technological development used in design and technology.

They will also produce a design portfolio, demonstrating research, designing, development, modelling, manufacturing processes, testing and quality control and evaluation.
