Dear parent carer

Monday 9 December – Full closure for KS3 only

I am writing to advise you that we have reluctantly decided to close KS3 all day on Monday 9 December.  This applies to years 7-9 only.  The Academy will remain open for KS4 and KS5.

We continue to have major issues with staffing, with nearly one third of teachers off sick today.  I am already aware that I have a high number of staff certified as sick for Monday, meaning that we will be unable to cover classes effectively.

However, by having years 10-13 in school we can continue to provide these exam groups with a quality experience.

I expect all students to return to the Academy on Tuesday 10 December.

Thank you for your support.

Kind regards

Alison Downey

Media Studies

Media Studies

We live in a media-saturated world. From video clips on your phone, to TV adverts to blockbuster movies, to billboards on the underground, to the music in your ears, you are surrounded by media messages for most of your waking hours. How do you make sense of them all? How do you know what they are trying to communicate — both on an obvious and a less obvious level? How do you know how much you have been influenced — consciously or subconsciously — by these media messages? Does the media reflect your reality, or control the way you view it?

Students will also develop enquiry, critical thinking and decision-making skills through the study of media texts, audiences and institutions in preparation for their exam. Students will also understand how to use media key concepts to analyse media texts and their contexts and specifically when analysing media products in the exams.

Students will also complete a piece of coursework that will enable them to develop their practical skills through opportunities for personal engagement and creativity.

During the A Level course, students are able to enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of the media and its role in their daily lives. They will investigate media in order to understand and evaluate how meanings and responses are created across the media platforms, broadcast, e-media and print.

Students are encouraged to demonstrate, develop and formulate their understanding of the media and its influential role in today's society as well as debating major contemporary media issues
