Student Leadership
The student leadership programme provides personal development to all students and aims to develop respectful, inspirational and active leaders within the academy who are involved in the day-to-day leadership, feeding into the mission of the students being a pillar of any community.
Through being a student leader, students are immersing themselves and promoting the Ark Putney Academy culture and ethos. These students represent the Academy’s pillars of: enthusiasm, effort, teamwork, independence, commitment and community through modelling exemplary behaviour and attitude towards learning, other students and extra-curricular opportunities. The student leaders support the leadership and management to promote an inclusive environment that meets the needs of all students, irrespective of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation
The student leadership is a ‘bridge’ between the staff and the students; to ensure that the students’ voices are heard, and that positive change occurs within the academy.
There are 4 house captains across year 7-12. One from each year group for each house in the house system: Brunel, Rowling, McQueen and Turing. Each student will hold a responsibility in working with the Heads of House within the academy to run house events and increase engagement across house-led activities.
Alongside the house leaders are the 4 senior student leaders, 2 Head Students and 2 Deputy Head Students. These students are responsible for overseeing the student council, reporting to the SLT and supporting staff with whole school events.
Student voice
All students have the opportunity to and are encouraged to participate in student voice to ensure that they are part of the positive change that they want to see in the academy. Students have two opportunities to participate in student voice:
1. Through half termly surveys on their Chromebook via Microsoft Forms
2. Through the student council system each half term in their tutor groups
Each half term a question or area of discussion is sent out to the whole school and then the feedback is fed all the way up to the Senior Leadership Team using the system below.
Student reps can be changed each half term so that a wide variety of students are able to have the opportunity to represent their tutor group and year group.

What Motivated You To Apply? |
What motivated me to apply: When joining the school in year 7, my role in the student council enabled me to work alongside the current head students at the time. Their confidence and desire to evoke change within the school system encouraged me to do the same. As I progressed through the school and into the 6th form, I developed my own inclination towards change and felt applying for head girl would be the perfect opportunity to do so. |
What are you hoping to achieve whilst in the role? |
This year I'd like to put a real emphasis on fundraising to not only benefit the students at Ark Putney, but the surrounding local community. I would also like to focus on ensuring the school can offer as much support in terms of mental health as possible. This would include making sure PSHE sessions are utilised as an opportunity to raise awareness and discuss potential issues students may be facing- whether it be as a result of their studies or external factors. These are both two issues that I feel the pandemic have worsened and I'd like to be able to make the transition back to daily life as a student unchallenging and trouble-free. |

What motivated you to apply to be a student leader at APA? |
Since studying at APA the teachers at the school have provided me with so many opportunities to grow and develop both academically and personally. I would like to share this with the younger APA community, to encourage independence and inspire them to achieve their fullest potential, as I am doing. |
What are you hoping to achieve whilst in this role? |
In my one-year tenure as deputy head girl, I am committed to giving back where possible. Not only would I like to support and bring about positive changes for our student body, I aim to uphold our current school culture and ethos, helping to represent and highlight the value of the school pillars. As part of the student leadership team I strive to bridge the gap between fellow pupils and our mentors to highlight and tackle misrepresentation and misunderstanding in our school community, with the hope to create a happier, healthier, and all-inclusive environment. I aim to raise more awareness of various issues such as mental health amongst students, which can be overlooked in the school environment. By cultivating these ideas, it would allow the APA community to excel that one step further. |
